Forbes’ Future Of Work 50 2023 report presents a compelling snapshot of the leaders and innovators shaping our professional world. Amidst a backdrop of significant upheavals—like the explosive growth of ChatGPT, substantial tech industry layoffs and economic uncertainties—the notion of work is undergoing a profound transformation.

This year’s report reflects a shift from the “Great Resignation” to a period marked by a focus on efficiency and a reconsideration of the traditional workplace. Generative AI is poised to streamline many roles, making them less monotonous. The labor movement is witnessing a resurgence, securing notable victories across various industries. There’s a growing trend towards skills-based hiring, moving away from the conventional emphasis on academic qualifications.

The concept of hybrid work, blending remote and in-office arrangements, is proving its staying power, offering a level of flexibility that seems to be the new norm. However, the exact trajectory of the future of work remains uncertain, particularly in how it will be structured and where it will take place.

In creating this list, Forbes consulted a broad range of experts, including advisors, academics, investors and previous honorees to identify individuals who are not just thinking about the future of work, but actively shaping it. From nearly 200 candidates, the list was distilled down to 50, considering factors like impact, potential, relevance and creativity–highlighting the thought leaders and innovators who are helping to bring the future of work into clearer focus.

The Future of Recruitment 2023

Chris Hyams, CEO | Indeed

Chris Hyams, a former teacher and musician, is committed to revolutionizing the job search process. He aims to cut the job-seeking duration by half by 2030 and advocates for pay transparency, enforcing pay range disclosures in job postings where mandated by law, and providing estimates elsewhere. Despite these ambitions, Hyams recently faced the tough decision to reduce his workforce by 15%, reflecting broader industry challenges.

Alexis Ohanian, Cofounder | Reddit and Founder | 776

After George Floyd’s death in 2020, Alexis Ohanian stepped down from his board position to open a spot for a Black director. In his roles as a venture capitalist and philanthropist, he focuses on expanding access to essential resources like capital and the internet. His portfolio includes investments in AI enterprises and a group-coaching platform, all potentially impacting the future of work. Also known for his advocacy for paternal engagement and as Serena Williams’ husband, he humorously labels himself as a “Business Dad” on LinkedIn.

Ryan Roslansky, CEO | LinkedIn

During the pandemic, LinkedIn, traditionally seen as the more professional counterpart to platforms like TikTok and Twitter, emerged as a significant player as remote workers sought to stay connected and enhance their personal brands. Under Ryan Roslansky since June 2020, the platform experienced remarkable growth, including eight consecutive quarters of increased membership, reaching one billion members. The platform has innovatively launched AI tools and a skills-matching feature, anticipating the future needs of the job market. Despite these successes, LinkedIn has faced two rounds of layoffs in a cooling labor market, but remains committed to investing in strategic priorities for its future.

Kieran Snyder, CEO and Cofounder | Textio

Kieran Snyder, an expert in the intersection of language and bias in the workplace, co-founded Textio, a company that assists organizations in crafting less biased job descriptions and recruitment materials. The latest innovation from Textio, Textio Lift, employs AI to aid managers in minimizing bias in performance evaluations. This tool flags potentially exaggerated or personality-focused language and ensures that generative AI output remains free of bias. Snyder holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and cognitive science.
