Generative AI, a groundbreaking technology poised to revolutionize the world of work, has sparked both excitement and concerns among employees. As research conducted by Zokri reveals, there is a pressing need to address these concerns and provide reassurance. By fostering transparency and prioritizing learning and development, organizations can alleviate anxieties and help employees navigate the transformative impact of generative AI.

The Promise and Concerns Surrounding Generative AI:

Generative AI has emerged as a prominent concept, raising questions about its potential implications. Will it replace human workers, or will it enhance their efficiency and effectiveness? While studies, such as Microsoft’s research on generative AI models like Google’s BARD and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, suggest that these technologies will act as co-pilots, freeing humans to leverage their unique skills, there remain concerns about its impact on the job market.

Based on a survey conducted by Zokri, a software development platform, with a sample size of 2,000 workers in the UK and US, 50% of respondents believe that generative AI will lead to job losses, and 42% express personal worries about job security. These concerns are not unfounded, as recent announcements from companies like IBM and BT about job cuts linked to AI confirm.

Fostering Transparency and Learning:

To address these concerns and prepare employees for the future influenced by AI, organizations can take proactive steps. First and foremost, clear and transparent communication about how AI will be used in the workplace is essential. Zokri’s research highlights that generative AI has diverse use cases, including research (28%), summarizing large data sets (24%), writing copy and code (22%), and customer service (25%). However, not all these use cases are relevant to every company. Establishing a robust communication strategy around AI can make employees feel more positive, with 69% indicating increased confidence in AI and 64% experiencing improved job security perceptions.

Secondly, it is crucial to focus on digital upskilling. While employees, as indicated by Udemy’s research, are already eager to upskill in areas like ChatGPT, organizations must actively support and facilitate the upskilling process for all employees. This not only ensures the employees’ skills remain relevant in an increasingly digitized world but also benefits the organization as a whole.

Zokri’s data further underscores that 57% of organizations worry about falling behind competitors in the absence of a clear organizational strategy around AI. Ironically, generative AI itself can assist organizations in identifying skill gaps and providing targeted training for employees. HR tech vendors recognize the importance of learning and development, with

integrations of generative AI into their platforms. For example, SAP SuccessFactors collaborates with Microsoft to leverage generative AI-powered Copilot in Viva Learning, delivering personalized learning recommendations based on data and individual development goals. Digital learning provider GoodHabitz has also integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT, opening new avenues for innovative and impactful learning experiences.

By embracing transparency and prioritizing learning and development, organizations can effectively address concerns related to generative AI in the workplace. Clear communication strategies, coupled with opportunities for digital upskilling, foster employee confidence, enhance job security perceptions, and equip individuals and organizations to thrive in an AI-driven future. Embracing the transformative potential of generative AI while prioritizing the well-being and growth of employees is key to shaping a successful and inclusive future of work.
